How long does it take to cycle a fish tank?

Usually 4 to 8 weeks. The exact time depends on temperature, pH and how you feed the bacteria — and you only know it’s done when the tests say so.

The short answer

Most new tanks take 4 to 8 weeks to cycle. The bacteria that make a tank safe for fish grow slowly: they need a steady supply of ammonia, oxygen from a running filter, warm water and a stable pH. With bottled bacteria the cycle sometimes finishes in 1 to 2 weeks, but not always.
The finish line is not a date. It is the 24-hour test: after a full dose of about 2 ppm, ammonia and nitrite both read 0 a day later, twice in a row.

What happens along the way

Every tank has its own pace, but the order is always the same:
  • 1.
    Ammonia stays high and nitrite is 0. The first group of bacteria is multiplying, which often takes a week or two. Top ammonia back up to 2 ppm whenever it drops below 1 ppm.
  • 2.
    Nitrite appears and climbs. That is good news: the first group works. Keep feeding ammonia. If nitrite reaches 5 ppm or more, change some water and pause the ammonia until it drops.
  • 3.
    Nitrite starts falling while nitrate rises, and ammonia disappears within a day. This is usually the longest wait.
  • 4.
    Run 24-hour tests until two pass in a row. Then do a big water change and add fish.

What slows a cycle down

  • Low pH. Below 6.5 the bacteria slow down; below 6.0 they almost stop.
  • Cold water. The bacteria grow best at 25–30 °C (77–86 °F).
  • Chlorine or chloramine. Tap water added without water conditioner kills bacteria.
  • Too much ammonia. Above about 4 ppm it holds them back — more is not faster.
  • Very high nitrite. At 5 ppm and above the second group struggles.

Can you speed it up?

Keep the water within 25–30 °C (77–86 °F), the filter running day and night, and ammonia near 2 ppm — not higher.
Bottled bacteria and filter media from an established tank help the most. Bottles vary: some tanks cycle in a couple of weeks with them, others take the usual time. Either way the 24-hour test is the only proof.
Fast-growing live plants take up ammonia and make a tank more stable, but they also hide the signal: ammonia can fall without the bacteria doing the work. Watch nitrite and nitrate instead.

Why waiting pays off

Adding fish before the cycle is finished is the most common reason new fish fall ill. Ammonia and nitrite damage gills even at 0.25 ppm. If fish are already in the tank, test every day and change 30⁠–⁠50% of the water, with conditioner, whenever ammonia or nitrite reaches that level.
